Our Purpose
Our Mission
Defend youth rights by building and training a statewide defense coalition that challenges injustices, drives policy change, and champions community.
Our Vision
California sets the standard for youth justice, where statewide efforts ensure:
-
-
-
-
- Every county has a holistic team ready to defend & transform the potential of each young person,
- Every community has place-based alternatives to youth detention,
- Every child has an equitable chance to heal, grow, and thrive.

Our Values
-
-
- Equity: Every child in the youth justice system deserves dignity, fairness, and respect, free from discrimination based on identity, ability, or background.
- Defender Excellence: Youth must have timely access to highly skilled, well-resourced, and specialized defenders who understand and advocate for their unique needs.
- Growth: All youth are capable of transformation, and justice must center opportunities for rehabilitation over punishment.
- Community: Justice is most effective when guided by the voices of impacted youth, families, and communities, and when support is rooted in connection and care.
- Childhood: Children should be treated as children—diverted from the justice system whenever possible and never subjected to adult prosecution or lifelong penalties.
-

Our North Stars
Eliminate youth incarceration, replacing it with community-based, transformative solutions that prioritize youth development and dignity.
Create a youth justice system free from racial bias and discrimination, ensuring equitable treatment for all young people.
End the adultification of youth in the legal system, treating every young person as a child first, with opportunities for growth, development, and redemption.
Develop the most skilled, passionate, and effective youth defender community in the nation.
Our Commitment to Racial Justice
CYDC will provide educational and training programs, publications, and policy positions that reflect and respect difference, and address the racial bias and harms of poverty which disproportionately affect virtually all system-involved youth and their families.
CYDC’s work will highlight and combat the discriminatory impact of policing and prosecution on youth of color, including African American and Latine youth.
CYDC will recruit membership and leadership reflecting the diversity of the youth in the delinquency system and persons who have experienced the effects of poverty first-hand.

We need your help!
CYDC’s vision is that young people in California have access to excellent legal representation, receive fair and equitable treatment in the courts, and be provided with credible, trauma-informed, and community-supported alternatives to incarceration that foster success. We’ve made progress, but we need your help to turn our vision into reality.
