PJDC Takes a Stand in LA County

12/18/24: PJDC Executive Director Brooke Harris, a Commissioner with the Los Angeles County Probation Oversight Commission, and our powerful community coalition partners are speaking out against the unsuitability of Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall. Please take a moment to read these statements in the Los Angeles TimesLAist and WitnessLA. Los Angeles County Probation Department has a long and significant history of failing to protect young people locked up in juvenile facilities. The Board of State and Community Corrections, responsible for annual inspections of all local county jails and juvenile halls and for establishing Title 15 minimum standards of care, put it starkly:  Los Angeles County has failed to meet minimum standards for more than half a decade and continues to attempt to shirk its responsibilities.

In partnership with the California Alliance for Youth and Community Justice, PJDC is taking a lead role in calling out both LA County and the Probation Department for neglecting to keep young people safe, and for failing to be accountable.

PJDC’s core values include ensuring children in the youth justice system are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness regardless of race, culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or economic status. This current situation is an egregious violation of our values and PJDC has stepped in quickly to respond and advocate.
